Bill was born in Brisbane, the only son of Roy and Alice Nelson.
His early years were spent in Brisbane, and while his father was away serving with the Australian Air Force he and his Mother lived at Clayfield and he attended school at Eagle Junction.
In the late 1940s, The family moved to Charleville, but Bill continued his education as a boarder at Nudgee College, where he made friendships that have endured to this day. It was while he was at Charleville that he began his flying lessons. After the death of his Mother in the sixties, the property was sold in 1969 and Bill moved to Brisbane where he worked as a truck driver and occasional taxi driver. He married Patricia in 1973, and the following year they moved into their house at Deception Bay.
He had always been very interested in all things aviation and became a member of Queensland Air Museum in the early eighties and continued this association, attending whenever he had the opportunity. He was very proud to receive his 30-year Certificate in 2011.
Unfortunately, Bill did not enjoy good health over the last ten years and had two lots of surgery, and then he was diagnosed with cancer in mid-2015. He passed away in June this year.
