Jack was born and grew up in Mareeba. He was always interested in aircraft and had his earliest flying experiences in joyflights from Cairns during the late 1930s with the local mail pilot. Post war, Jack worked as a clerk for Queensland Railways in Brisbane. In 1979 he began training for a Private Pilot's Licence and flew until 2004 as a Life Member of Redcliffe Aero Club. He flew Tiger Moth, Auster, Miles, Chipmunk, and Cessna aircraft. With his keen interest in aircraft Jack joined QAM in 1986 and became a life member here also. Jack is survived by a family of five sons, one of whom is an airline pilot.
