The Soviet Charlie Class nuclear submarine and its Natya Class minesweeper escort photographed by the crew of P-3C Orion A9-760 during a Gateway patrol from Butterworth on 16 August 1981. While the Orion was shadowing the submarine, sonobuoys were dropped to gather intelligence. The Russians recovered one of these sonobuoys and used the hydrophone to deliver cordial greetings to the Australian crew. In essence, the message invited the illegitimate kangaroos to go away! Subsequently the sonobuoys were used for small arms target practice. Picture: RAAF via Peter Scovell
